Termite treatment and control in Newcastle

Found termites, or want to keep them out? We treat active termites across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland and set up a management plan for the long run: targeted treatment, termite baiting and monitoring, chemical treated zones and ongoing inspections.

Bait and monitoring stations are set into the soil around the building.

It starts with an inspection

Treatment follows what the inspection finds

Every treatment starts with a termite inspection: which termites, how far the activity goes, where they are getting in and, where we can find it, where the nest is. That decides which treatment suits the house. What we recommend depends on the property, how it is built, the termite species and how active they are.

If you have found termites, leave them alone until then. Spraying or breaking open their workings can drive them off for a while and make them harder to treat.

About our termite inspections

Sources: CSIRO, Managing termites (2021).

  1. Leave them be

No spraying, no breaking open workings. Photos help.

  2. Inspect and confirm

Activity, extent, entry points and conditions that invite termites.

  3. Find the nest if we can

Treating a colony at the nest is quicker and cheaper than chasing it through the house.

  4. Treat

Above-ground baiting, targeted or foam treatment, nest injection, a chemical treated zone, or a combination.

  5. Re-inspect

Check the activity has stopped, then yearly inspections to keep it that way.

Treatment and management options

Termite treatment and baiting options

A termite management plan usually combines more than one. Which ones suit depends on the house, the site and what the inspection found.

An above-ground termite bait station taped onto a brick wall over a termite mud lead

Above-ground termite baiting

What we do
Place bait stations directly on active termite workings inside or against the home.
How it works
Above-ground baiting is used when treating active termites. They feed on the bait and carry it back to the colony, which is why it can eliminate a colony even when the nest cannot be found.
Keep in mind
The stations are checked regularly until the activity stops, then the home is re-inspected.
Suits
Homes with active termites.

In-ground baiting and monitoring (Sentricon)

What we use
An in-ground monitoring and baiting management system such as Sentricon Always Active: stations set into the soil around the building about 3 metres apart, each holding a high-density rod with termiticide, active from the day it goes in.
How it works
This is a preventative system. Termites foraging near the home find the stations, feed on the bait and carry it back to the colony.
Keep in mind
Baits do not wall the house off, so the stations are checked and the house is still inspected regularly.
Suits
New and existing homes, as ongoing protection.
Soil dug out along the brick piers at the base of a clad house, with a hose laid out, for a chemical treated zone around the building

Chemical treated zone

What we do
Apply a specialised termiticide into the soil around the perimeter of the building, as a long-lasting deterrent.
How it works
Correctly installed and maintained, a treated zone is designed to stop termites getting into the building unseen. Exactly how it works depends on the registered product used, and inspections are still needed.
Keep in mind
The zone has to stay unbroken. New garden beds, paving and digging along the walls can breach it, and the chemical has a working life.
Suits
Existing homes, as a long-lasting deterrent around the building.

Targeted, foam and nest treatments

What we do
Treat the active termites directly where they are working, including foaming treatments into walls, cavities and timbers where appropriate, and direct chemical injection into a termite nest when we can find it.
How it works
Foam carries the treatment into spaces a spray cannot reach, such as wall voids and hollow timbers. Injecting the nest directly treats the colony at its source.
Keep in mind
It deals with the termites we can reach. A baiting system or treated zone is usually recommended as well to protect the house over time.
Suits
Active termites found inside a home.

Nest treatment

When we can find the nest

When we find termites in a house we do our best to find their nest, because that makes treating them a lot quicker and cheaper.

On one job the termites in the house were coming from a nest in the neighbour's yard. With the neighbours' permission we dug it up and flooded it with termiticide, then booked a re-inspection of the house and the nest two weeks later, to check the termites were no longer in the house.

Ongoing management

No system is a guarantee, so keep inspecting

Termite management plans are not always 100 per cent effective. They are designed to cut the risk, and treatments can be weakened over time by renovations, garden changes, slab movement and chemicals wearing off. That is why we recommend a termite inspection every year after treatment.

We had our first pest spray with Elite this week. Mitch did a fantastic job and his attention to detail was perfect. There is no smell, we have lots of dead bugs and spiders we have shows the quality of equipment that is used. This is probably by far the best one we've had done to date. Highly recommend.
